The churches of Chiloé are entirely built of wood. The churches of Detif, Ichuac, Nercón, Quinchao, Rilán, San Juan, Tenaún, Vilupulli, Achao, Aldachildo, San Francisco de Castro, Chonchi, Colo and Dalcahue have been declared World Heritage.
The church of Achao and all those who belong to the Chilota school have a three-story basilic floor, the central with a vault and the central tower on the balcony.
From the church of Achao to the churches of Rilán and Castro that close the cycle of the great churches of Chilota, the development of this school can be followed for about two hundred years. Regardless of the baroque sculptures and frames of the Achao church, or the sober neoclassical composition of the Chonchi or Dalcahue church in the mid-19th century, or the neo-Gothic in Rilan, the styles are just ornaments with which the church is lined to taste. of time without changing its overall design.
They remained standing for almost 300 years.
The need to preserve them meant that 16 of the Chiloe Churches were declared a National Monument and that in 1993, the Chiloe Friends of Churches Cultural Foundation named these 16 temples as candidates for UNESCO World Heritage.
