The natural mineral water of the sulfuric thermal baths is characterized by the physical and chemical point of view being a hyposaline, sulfuric, chlorinated, sodium and calcium water with a pH of 11.5.
According to Prof. Herculano de Carvalho, water is "unique in the country" and "we are not aware of any similar foreigners." The water is captured through two vertical holes: Sulfuro I and Sulfuro II with 120 and 150m respectively. The water emerges at a temperature of 19 ° C.
Studies carried out by I.S.T. of Lisbon revealed that the water used in the baths is about 3,500 years old. in fact, the first users of this for thermal purposes would have been the Romans, probably in the time of Caesar Augustus (119 BC)
